Global Eats, Local Peeps: Our collective features talented cooks from our local immigrant communities.

Nibble Kitchen will feature a wide-ranging international menu that rotates—Venezuelan arepas one day, Ethiopian wots the next—you get the picture!  The kitchen will also offer small cooking classes and demo dinner parties.  It will be a place of cultural interchange where people can come together and share ideas through food, while experiencing exciting new flavors and dishes.

The Somerville Arts Council (SAC) recognizes that food and cuisine are in fact forms of art and artistic expression, hence the Nibble program. Nibble is the culinary arm of the SAC and the program began organically through cultural exchange and sharing of cuisine. Nibble began with market tours of Union Square’s international markets, which inspired an international cookbook as well as the Nibble blog. What we found was that many of the international cooks in Somerville were interested in culinary entrepreneurship - and the Nibble Entrepreneurship Program (NEP) was born.

Now in its fourth year, the NEP has been instrumental in helping many entrepreneurs realize their food businesses. We vend at festivals, the Union Square Farmers’ Market, and other events throughout the community and are very much looking forward to opening our very own incubator kitchen at Bow Market. Like the overall Nibble initiative, the kitchen has a strong social justice and economic development component. Our entrepreneurs are predominantly female, hail from our rich immigrant communities, and many are lower income. Nibble Kitchen will allow them to test our restaurant concepts in a low-risk environment before launching independent businesses and share their cultures via food.

Nibble has a long standing relationship with Union Square Main Streets and our entrepreneurs have benefitted from working in and around Union Square. For this reason, moving into Bow Market in the heart of Union Square seemed like the perfect place to open up shop.

Nibble’s food will pair well with a refreshing beer from our neighbor, Remnant Brewing.
