Spells, Spirits & Scribes

“Bridging the power of tarot and creative writing, this generative workshop hosted by Heronkind, Zinnia Smith, and Dearly Studio will help you embrace your intuition and channel your own poetic messages from the other side. With The Wheel of Fortune, Ace of Swords, and the Queen of Wands as our guides, we'll dive into the lessons they have to share. They’re the best and you’ll have fun! All you need to bring is a writing utensil and the notebook of your choice. You will not be required to read aloud or share your work if you do not want to.

Game Designer Session & Talk x Side Quest Books & Games

Side Quest Books & Games welcomes celebrated designer Quinn Murphy for a discussion of his hip-hop game "Five Fires" with Heather! Sign up to play after.

Thoughtcrime Games (aka Quinn Murphy) has a new hip-hop game — and he's gonna talk about it with us!

Designer Quinn Murphy will join Side Quest's Heather Silva to talk about his inspiration for this game, and his approach to game design more broadly. After the chat, Quinn will run a session for those who would like to play!

Agenda:

  • 7-8pm, panel discussion

  • 8:30-10pm, game session

Ticket options:

  • $5 Panel only, redeemable as store credit

  • $10 Panel + game session, $5 still redeemable as store credit

ABOUT THE GAME

As part of a crew of DJs, breakers, MCs, and graffiti writers, you deal with the problems of your life. Your art helps you heal and deal with the stress, but that same art also moves those around you. Your art can shake up the system. It can change the world!

But before it does all that, it changes you.

Heavily inspired by Beat Street and Wild Style, Five Fires gives players the tools to build their own cities and grow within short 6 session campaigns to see how they can influence the place that their character lives.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Quinn Murphy's (founder of Thoughtcrime Games) journey with RPGs started when he "inherited" his brother's copy of Chainmail at the age of 11 Since then, he's written for a wide range of products and companies, including (but not limited to): Paizo (Pathfinder, Starfinder), WotC (Dragon Magazine), Kobold Press(Lost City, Kobold Quarterly), Magpie Games (Our Last Best Hope), Onyx Path Publishing (Trinity Continuum: Aeon), Simon & Schuster (The Ultimate Micro-RPG Book). He loves TTRPGs of all shapes and sizes and loves the thrill of finding the perfect form-factor to express a setting or idea. He believes that Imagination is for Everyone.

Join Side Quest Books & Games and experienced GM Paula for a one-shot of Dialect, a game about language and how it dies.

ABOUT THE GAME

Dialect is a game about an isolated community, their language, and what it means for that language to be lost. In this game, you’ll tell the story of the Isolation by building their language. New words will come from the fundamental aspects of the community: who they are, what they believe in, and how they respond to a changing world.

Players take away both the story they’ve told and the dialect they’ve built together.

"Cinder House" Book Club x Side Quest Books & Games

Join Side Quest Book & Games for a discussion of Freya Marske's Cinderella retelling novella, "Cinder House."

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sparks fly and lovers dance in this gorgeous, yearning Cinderella retelling from bestselling author Freya Marske—a queer Gothic romance perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and T. Kingfisher.

Ella is a haunting… Murdered at sixteen, her ghost is furiously trapped in her father's house, invisible to everyone except her stepmother and stepsisters.

Even when she discovers how to untether herself from her prison, there are limits. She cannot be seen or heard by the living people who surround her. Her family must never learn she is able to leave. And at the stroke of every midnight, she finds herself back on the staircase where she died.

Until she forges a wary friendship with a fairy charm-seller, and makes a bargain for three nights of almost-living freedom. Freedom that means she can finally be seen. Danced with. Touched.

You think you know Ella's story: the ball, the magical shoes, the handsome prince.

You're halfway right, and all-the-way wrong.

Rediscover a classic fairy tale in this debut novella from "the queen of romantic fantasy" (Polygon).

"Ghostboy" RPG Game Night x Side Quest Books & Games

Join Side Quest Books & Games and GM Chi for a meditative game of loss and moving on.

Ghostboy is about the beauty of moving on. In it, players each take on the role of an aspect of the world as a ghost explores it, remembering their past and coming to terms with the changes that have occurred since they left the material world behind.

It's a melancholic game of reflection, and while it may at times be sad, it's often joyful and loving.

Content: This game contains themes of death, memory loss, and loss in general. It’s a game about letting go. We will discuss safety tools and what we want to avoid in our game, but these mentioned themes are central to the game.

ABOUT YOUR GM

Chi (she/her) is a GM with a few years of experience running indie RPGs for friends and convention attendees, and she is now a regular GM at Side Quest. She loves encouraging player collaboration, worldbuilding, and introducing games to new players.

Gestalt Interiors: Physical Mood Boarding Salon x Give Good

Join us after hours at Give Good Home Shop for an intimate, analog evening devoted to learning how rooms hold together. Guided by gestalt design principles, we’ll slow down and study how these principles shape the feeling of a space before any single object comes into focus.

After a short salon-style lecture, you’ll work hands-on—no screens—to assemble a physical Gestalt Study using curated cutouts, pins, and a foam board, testing how lighting, furniture, and material interact as a whole.

Tea will be served. You’ll leave with a finished perception board and a new way of seeing—an internal filter you can carry into sourcing, decorating, and daily life. This is not about shopping lists or trends; it’s about learning to trust your eye.

Hot tea will be served. BYO beverage from one of our Bow Market neighbors

Salon-style lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. with activity to follow

"The Keeper of Magical Things" Book Club x Side Quest Books & Games

Join Side Quest Book & Games for a discussion of Julie Leong's cozy sapphic novel, "The Keeper of Magical Things."

ABOUT THE BOOK

An almost-mage discovers friendship—and maybe something more—in the unlikeliest of places in this delightfully charming novel from the USA Today bestselling author of The Teller of Small Fortunes.

Certainty Bulrush wants to be useful—to the Guild of Mages that took her in as a novice, to the little brother who depends on her, and to anyone else she can help. Unfortunately, her tepid magic hasn’t proven much use to anyone. When Certainty has the chance to earn her magehood via a seemingly straightforward assignment, she takes it. Nevermind that she’ll have to work with Mage Aurelia, the brilliant, unfairly attractive overachiever who’s managed to alienate everyone around her.

The two must transport minorly magical artifacts somewhere safe: Shpelling, the dullest, least magical village around. There, they must fix up an old warehouse, separate the gossipy teapots from the kind-of-flaming swords, corral an unruly little catdragon who has tagged along, and above all: avoid complications. The Guild’s uneasy relationship with citizens is at a tipping point, and the last thing needed is a magical incident.
